EV Market Share in India Jumps from 4% to 7% — What's Driving It

"How big is the EV market in India in 2026?" — Short answer: electric vehicles now account for roughly 7% of all new vehicle sales in India, up from ~4% a year ago. That's an ~75% jump in penetration in twelve months. Here's what's behind the number.
The Headline Numbers
Two-wheelers lead by volume — EV penetration in the 2W segment crossed 9% in early 2026. Three-wheelers are the most electric segment overall at ~25% EV penetration. Passenger cars climbed from ~2.5% to ~4.5%. Commercial vehicles remain low but doubled year-over-year.
What's Driving the Jump
Four forces stacking up at once: (1) PM E-DRIVE subsidies refreshed FAME-era incentives, (2) lithium-cell prices fell ~18% in 2025, dragging down EV sticker prices, (3) OEMs finally have serious product in every price band, and (4) public charging deployment crossed 30,000 connectors nationally.
Regional Leaders
Kerala, Delhi-NCR, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu account for more than 60% of EV sales. Kerala specifically has been one of the fastest-growing markets, with EV registrations growing ~45% year-over-year. See our Kochi charging guide for what this means on the ground.
What 7% Means for Charging Demand
At current sales mix, the installed EV park in India will roughly double in 24 months. That translates to ~3x growth in public charging energy throughput — and explains why utilization at well-located charging stations has climbed from ~22% to ~30% over the last year. See the profitability math.
Where We're Heading
Most independent forecasts now put India at 12–15% EV share by end-2027 and ~30% by 2030. The bottlenecks aren't demand any more — they're grid reliability and last-mile charger uptime.
For Site Owners: The Window
Charging stations launched in 2026 are riding the steepest part of the adoption curve. Locations that struggled with utilization in 2023–24 are now profitable. Explore the franchise programme if you have a high-traffic site.
