"What will my EV be worth in 3 years?" — Used EV residuals in India lagged ICE cars badly until 2024. In 2026, the picture has shifted. Here's the data and what it means for your purchase decision.
The 3-Year Residual Numbers
Indicative residuals at 3 years / 45,000 km, for cars bought new in 2023 and sold in 2026: Tata Nexon EV ~55–60% of new on-road price. MG ZS EV ~50–55%. Hyundai Kona ~48–52%. ICE equivalents: 60–65%. The gap is now ~5–10 percentage points, down from 20+ in 2023.
What Drives Used EV Pricing
Three big variables: (1) Battery state-of-health (SoH) — buyers now demand a certified SoH report. Above 90% commands a premium; below 80% kills the price. (2) Charging history — "AC-mostly" beats "DC-heavy" at resale. (3) Software updates — cars on the latest OTA generally fetch more.
Get a Battery Health Certificate
Most OEMs now issue a SoH certificate via their service network. Some independent labs (in Bangalore, Pune, Delhi) also offer third-party SoH testing for ₹3,000–₹6,000. Selling without one is leaving money on the table.
Which Models Hold Value Best
Strong network of authorised service, wide spare-parts ecosystem, and OTA update support drive residuals. Tata and Mahindra currently top the residual charts in India, with Hyundai close behind. Niche brands and early-generation EVs depreciate fastest.
The 2025+ Generation Will Hold Better
EVs sold from late 2024 onward have larger batteries, faster DC charging, and longer warranties (8 years / 1.6 lakh km standard). These structural improvements push 5-year residuals into the 50–55% range — closer to ICE.
For Buyers in the Used Market
Always insist on: SoH report, full OEM service history, list of OTA updates installed, and a charging-history dump (most apps export this). Avoid cars that lived on DC fast chargers (taxi/fleet use) unless the price reflects it.
The Strategic Buy
If you're EV-curious but worried about residuals, buy a 1–2 year old used EV with strong SoH. You skip the steepest part of the depreciation curve and get a near-new car at 60–70% of the price.
