What OCPP Actually Is
OCPP — Open Charge Point Protocol — is an open standard from the Open Charge Alliance that defines how an EV charger (the "Charge Point") talks to its backend management system. It controls start/stop, metering, firmware updates, diagnostics, and pricing. Without OCPP, you're locked into one vendor's cloud forever.
OCPP 1.6 / 1.6J — The Workhorse
OCPP 1.6 (released 2015) is the most widely deployed version in India. "J" means the JSON-over-WebSocket variant (the other was SOAP, now obsolete). It handles core charging, basic smart-charging profiles, and remote start/stop. ~85% of Indian chargers shipped before 2025 run 1.6J. It's stable but lacks ISO 15118 plug-and-charge, advanced security, and structured device management.
OCPP 2.0.1 — The Modern Baseline
OCPP 2.0.1 (released 2020, widely adopted from 2023) is what you should be buying in 2026. Big additions: structured device management, improved smart-charging, ISO 15118 plug-and-charge support, certificate-based security (TLS + signed firmware), display messaging, and tariff/cost handling at the charger. OCPP 2.1 — What's New
OCPP 2.1 (published Jan 2025) is the latest extension. Big themes: bidirectional charging (V2G/V2H) support, ISO 15118-20 alignment, battery swapping primitives, periodic event streams for richer telemetry, and improved tariff signalling. If you plan to host any V2G or large-fleet setup over the next 3 years, insist on 2.1-capable hardware.
1.6J vs 2.0.1 vs 2.1 — At a Glance
Security: 1.6 = optional TLS, 2.0.1 = full PKI, 2.1 = same + V2G certs. Smart charging: 1.6 = basic profiles, 2.0.1 = stacked profiles + 15118, 2.1 = bidirectional + battery swap. Device management: 1.6 = limited, 2.0.1+ = full reports + signed firmware. Plug-and-charge: 1.6 = no, 2.0.1+ = yes via 15118.
Practical Buying Advice
